Sustainable textiles from natural fibres
It is possible to have the best of both worlds by caring for the
environment & creating gorgeous fabrics just for you. We use a
range of natural, eco-ethical base cloths combined with best
digital printing practices to print-to-order, thereby reducing
ECO FRIENDLY BASECLOTHS
Our base cloths are friendly to our environment. We use both
linen and hemp/organic cotton blends. Because they are all
natural fibres the products are biodegradable and recyclable.
Linen comes from the flax plant and is eco friendly in many
ways. From being able to use the whole plant (not just for
textiles, but for others things such as the medicinal properties of
the flax seed, it's also used in paper, heat insulation and soap to
name a few).
Did you know:
- The flax plant requires less pesticides and water than
- As a crop flax reduces soil depletion because it is gentle on
the land and aligns into modern crop rotation cycles
- Flax doesn't require much energy to process it
- Flax linen is much stronger than cotton, which means that
drapes and upholstery made of linen is made to last and means less
textile waste in landfills.
Hemp is the darling of the eco-friendly world and is perfect for
your home interior design. It can be grown completely without
the use of pesticides, fungicides or herbicides. It is a natural
weed blocker and has a much higher yield than cotton while
requiring less water to cultivate. It is such a powerful plant is
it can even be planted to remove impurities from the environment,
including soil contaminants. Heart Ethical loves this, it's like a
The hemp fibre is also extremely durable, a natural flame
retardant, and naturally resistant to mould and mildew - what's not
to like about our darling hemp?
At Heart Ethical we know that 100 percent hemp can seem a rough,
this can be reduced with washing. We've reduced that further with a
beautiful organic cotton blend, where you get the best of hemp and
the softness of cotton without the environmental footprint.
Regular cotton is unfortunately very hard on our planet. Regular
cotton covers 2.5% of the world's cultivated land yet uses 16% of
the world's insecticides, more than any other single major
Organic cotton provides a better solution with biologically
based growing practices, which offer a healthier and cleaner
product, and benefits the planet. Surface and groundwater are
protected, insecticides are replaced with the manipulation of
ecosystems and long-term prevention of pests occurs through
beneficial habitat planting. These measures help to eliminate the
use of toxic chemicals used in cotton. One of the trade-ups of this
approach is that the soil has higher organic matter content,
thicker topsoil depth considerably reducing soil erosion.
Digital textile printing is a dramatically different from screen
printing. While traditional printing is aligned to mass production
and long runs, it is the opposite that is true for digital
printing. This sea change allow for Heart Ethical to easily
customise our designs so they are the perfect match for you. The
environmental footprint of digital printing is less than that of
traditional screen or rotary printing. There are less harmful
chemical used and the inks used are water based.
Waste is minimised as there is little clean up. You also print
only what you need, rather than metres upon metres that may not get
The printers Heart Ethical use are committed to investing into
the latest technology to ensure the best print results and reduce
impact on the environment.
Heart Ethical is committed to the environment, down to the
packaging. It's important that your product arrives in perfect
condition, and unfortunately plastic is one of the few products
that will protect the fabric from unexpected fluids (such as
rain!). Heart Ethical has researched oxo-degradable products, but
they haven't come up to par. The best option we have found is
plastic made from recycled plastic. Please recycle our bags,
because they can be reused. Reduce, reuse, recycle!
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
We try to reduce waste in everything we do and don't throw out
fabric. We do create samples of new designs that are then used for
marketing or gifts. If we're ever in the situation where we
occasionally can't use our samples for Heart Ethical business, we
donate the fabric for local community projects.
